Wild Ivory is the ideal destination for your wildlife and photographic safari experience. The pristine Waterberg biosphere is one of the least populated areas and one of the best wildlife areas in Southern Africa.

Apart from seeing the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo), guests at Welgevonden can also enjoy over 50 species of mammal and more than 300 bird species. The reserve is also well known for its rhinoceros and cheetah sightings.

Wild Ivory Eco Lodge is situated in the Western section of Welgevonden Game Reserve where there is an abundance of plains game which in turn attracts a number of predatory species from Lion to Jackal.

The Lodge is elevated and overlooks a wooded plain, a private waterhole and allows for beautiful and uninterrupted views of the reserve, right up to the Waterberg escarpment far into the distance. In summer watch spectacular electrical thunderstorms roll in, and at night star-gaze in wonder at the magnificent milky-way.

Wild Ivory is one of the few lodges in South Africa which is eco-friendly and has a low impact on the environment. Guests are accommodated in luxury tents with stunning views and spacious, well-appointed bathrooms. Large double beds and outside loungers allow you to relax in complete comfort in a true wilderness setting.

During their stay, guests are treated to excellent traditional meals which are prepared by our very talented chef. Meals are served at the main lodge where guests can keep an eye on the waterhole whilst enjoying their dinner. However, if you want to do your own thing, self-catering packages are also available.

Wild Ivory Eco Lodge’s Eco-Footprint

Wild Ivory Eco Lodge was built using eco-friendly, ‘green’ products and runs off solar power. The lodge blends into the surrounds and has a low impact on the environment. All paints and consumables used for the construction and running of the lodge are eco-friendly and no hard woods were used. Even the sewerage system is eco-friendly. Efforts have been made to give the lodge a low carbon footprint by making use of solar power which is a renewable energy source. The nearby borehole supplies crystal clear water for all the Lodges’ needs.

Wild Ivory Eco Lodge is located in the ‘Big 5’, Welgevonden Game Reserve which forms part of the larger Waterberg Biosphere district. To ensure the best possible game viewing experience for our guests, we only use open-top 4×4 game viewing vehicles. All game drives are conducted by our experienced and knowledgeable game rangers, who are locally familiar with the reserve as well as the movements of the ‘Big 5’ within the reserve.

Welgevonden is an open-system reserve - therefore the wildlife can move freely throughout the park, so there is never any guarantee of seeing all of the animal species during your stay. However, the reserve offers some of the best game viewing and natural scenic beauty sights available in South Africa. During each game drive we offer our guests a unique, and unforgettable experience where a large number of birds, animal and other species will be seen amongst some of the most spectacular panoramic scenery.

Guests staying at our Eco Lodge will be unlucky not to see at least three of the ‘Big 5’ as well as many other species during their stay. Due to the protection offered to the animals in the Reserve, most species are very comfortable co-existing with the game vehicles. Close sightings are often a common occurrence, allowing our guests to take advantage of some excellent photographic opportunities.
